Data Recall Limited was a small British company, manufacturing one of
the world's first all electronic word processors.
When I joined the company in February 1982 the current model in production
was the Diamond 5. Based around the Zilog Z80 microprocessor with 64k
bytes of memory, two 8 inch 360k byte floppy disk drives, a monochrome
monitor large enough to display a full size A3 page and a very noisy daisywheel
printer.
The company was based in Dorking. Manufacturing facilities were at Sondes
Place House, to be more accurate in the converted stables next door, with
offices in the high street.
I was employed in the 'test' department, testing, fault finding and repairing
circuit boards, disk drives, printers etc.
During
my employment, the company moved from Dorking to a factory unit opposite
the railway station in Bookham, Surrey.
At this time, production began of the Diamond 7. This model was slightly
more advanced. Much smaller physically but still based around the Z80
processor and still with only 64k of RAM but now with dual 8 inch 1M byte
floppy disk drives!
By
the beginning of 1984, Data Recall Ltd had been bought by OTL Ltd, a subsidiary
of ITL Ltd. By early spring we had all been told we were all to be made
redundant.
I didn't stay to the end, instead I was offered several jobs, one of which
was with Racal Defence in Hersham. I took the job with ERA Technology
in Leatherhead.
